Children’s joy and happiness are a big part of their learning. At Kingwood Children, we encourage them to have fun as a part of their education, with child-led activities which are adapted to their unique abilities and interests.
A cornerstone of our teaching philosophy is rooted in Koselig, a concept that is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture and emphasises the importance of being comfortable and cosiness.
We have your childcare needs covered! Kingwood Children offer exceptional wraparound childcare with lots of all-inclusive extras to give your children the very best start in life. Plus, our handpicked team of expert educators will support your child through play, allowing them to thrive during this truly magical time in their development.
The journey at Kingwood Uffculme begins in Elm with our youngest babies and moves through the tree rooms until we reach Oak, our Pre-School.
Each room in our setting has its own distinct character, designed to fit the developmental stage of the children that will be cared for inside it. All of our rooms are linked by their use of natural materials, imaginative resources, calm colours, cosy lighting, plants, curiosity spaces, and busy explorers having fun!
Elm is where our Kingwood journey begins!
We have carefully designed our setting so that it is a nurturing home from home environment where your child can feel secure exploring all the wonderful natural resources, learning toys, and gentle adventures that we have available.
We follow a rhythm in Elm that allows our youngest explorers to settle quickly, feeling safe and developing confidence from the moment they join us. Times for adventure and discovery are interspersed with gentle stories and songs, sleep and snacks.

All sessions are carefully planned to be child-led and sprinkled with new skills to be learnt in our fantastic curiosity areas. Gross motor skills and communication are major areas of development for our Elm children. To support this we use a variety of communication tools; songs, stories, sign language, and conversation, based upon a philosophy of care, core, connection, and chat.
From the very beginning, we encourage independence in Elm which builds the child's self-confidence. As soon as they are ready, our Elm children can enjoy daily activities such as brushing their own teeth, washing their hands, drinking from cups, and feeding themselves. Each child is an individual, learning new skills at their own pace.

Willow is our bespoke toddler room at Kingwood.
Similar to Elm it has a cosy loft conversion aspect with sloping ceilings and ambient natural light. Throughout Kingwood, we embrace an ethos of cosiness and adventure - enhancing our connection to nature by designing calm, creative spaces full of natural resources for the children to enjoy.
We follow a daily rhythm to support the children with their emotional and physical development. We have lowered self-care areas, like the toilets, sinks, and changing areas to facilitate independence.

The sensory room adjoins Willow, providing a calm, quiet area for children to choose to relax and process their inner thoughts and feelings. It is also a space to experience a wide range of sensory play and at nap time transforms into a cosy nest.
Kingwood is a language-rich environment. Books are readily accessible throughout Willow and stories are enjoyed together each day. We also encourage Makaton signing, which promotes language as a physical as well as a verbal tool for expression.

At Kingwood our learning and development pathway flows seamlessly through all of our rooms. We continue to learn playfully, naturally led by the children's interests. In this way we are all engaged and curious, approaching our learning journey with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure.
Children who are new to childcare and those moving downstairs from Willow are supported with familiar routines and transition sessions to help encourage a sense of security. In Maple, we work together as a team, understanding and celebrating the individual talents and interests of each child.

Our ethos embodies an understanding of the importance of nature connection as a tool for wellbeing. Maple is a calm and cosy environment full of natural materials to develop the senses and inspire imaginative play.
The design of Maple takes inspiration from the outdoors, so you will find lots of natural light, plants, and curiosity spaces filled with treasures we have collected on our many adventures out and about. As part of our daily rhythm we spend time outside whatever the weather.
Feeling a sense of belonging within the community is very important to Kingwood. We have connections with local care homes, businesses, and tradespeople who love to share stories, skills, and time with the children.

Oak is the last of our Kingwood classrooms for the children to explore.
Here we focus on nurturing the skills needed to develop the children's readiness for their next step into a school environment. Within Oak, we place an emphasis on supporting the children with their increasing independence.
During their time in Oak, our little explorers are encouraged to use the toilet independently, or with support and to wash their hands. Most are able to independently dress and undress themselves, and are encouraged to do this when we go for outings.

The children have formed strong attachments with both peers and staff, forming strong friendships and a sense of working together to achieve goals. We continue to support the children's understanding of their emotions and behaviour, promoting self-care and regulation.
Oak is a room filled with the experience of playful learning! We make the most of the natural ambient light coming into Oak through the big glass garden doors connecting us to the outdoors always, and promoting free flow into our outdoor covered learning area
and adventure garden.
The Oak year ends with our final graduation party where the children are each celebrated for their personal achievements and gifted with a package of presents and memories to take with them on their journey.
